As part of The Rose House's mission of providing
opportunities to developmentally disabled adults in
Northern New Jersey, we offer
the Vocational Training Program (VTP).
Since 1999, VTP has been successful in:
• Creating good jobs for people with disabilities;
• Training people for, and help them transition to, good jobs in
private industry;
• Serving as
an employer for people not employable in competitive jobs.
We define a good job
as
one
where the employee:
•
Is paid a reasonable wage for their work;
• Is treated with respect and a positive attitude in the workplace;
• Receives opportunities for personal and employment growth over time.
VTP provides work
skills, job habits and interpersonal skills needed to get and keep good jobs in food service and other
industries.
We believe most individuals with disabilities
can - with proper training and support - be employed in the food
services industry.
Typical positions we seek out for our
graduates include jobs in fast food establishments, restaurants,
nursing homes, hospitals, and company cafeterias, as well as
employment at our Rose House Café. These skills may also
be used for entry level positions in retail stores.
The Rose House believes that using individualized curricula and instruction
greatly increase the likelihood of success - more than any
“pre-planned” course of study.
We provide people with instruction in a variety
of work-related subjects, and adjust each course to meet the specific needs
of our students.
We teach real-life skills on a
graduated basis, providing concrete examples as we go.
Our
graduates will develop a strong set of
workplace skills when they successfully complete our training.
We offer a
very low ratio of students to instructors, and for the hands-on
portion of the training provide a one-to-one mentor relationship
to our students.

VTP is
designed to prepare graduates for full-time competitive employment in private
industry, and consists of 120 hours of instruction and hands-on
experience.
The Program is normally five days per week
for six weeks. Each day lasts four hours
- two hours in a classroom setting and two hours of "hands-on" work
for the Café.
We can spread the program out over a longer period, and include evening
sessions if the schedules of the students require it. Class size
is typically three to six students.
Shorter, less intensive courses are
offered for those not seeking employment in the food service
industry, and are tailored to group’s needs and
interests.
These courses can focus on vocational training, self-help
skills for more independent living, or recreational activities
such as party planning and dessert making.
We also offer
opportunities for job sampling, field trips to the cafe, scout
cooking badges, and private parties for special needs groups.
The cost of the full 120 hour course plus
follow-up job placement is $1,350.00. Additional services
- including job coaching - can be
provided separately (at an additional fee) if needed. For
more information, call (973) 984-0006, or
E-Mail Us.
Shorter classes start at $65 per person
for four ninety-minute sessions, covering
introduction to food preparation and basic safety in the
kitchen.
